The world is not “straight until proven gay.”
It’s great that so many Girlfriend Support Blogs and initiatives are cropping up, but: none of the members of One Direction have ever publicly labeled their sexuality. You cannot say they’re heterosexual FOR them any more than slash shippers can say they’re gay FOR them. NEITHER OF THOSE STATEMENTS IS FOR ANYONE BUT THEY THEMSELVES TO MAKE.
There are SO MANY SEXUALITIES between gay and straight and we don’t know what — if any! — of them any of the boys identify themselves to be.
It’s awesome that people want to treat Danielle, Eleanor, Perrie, and any others who come along the way better. But don’t do that at the expense of LGBTQAIP fans, the validity of non-heteronormative lifestyles, and don’t phrase your support of the girlfriends or the relationships involving them in such bleakly queer-erasing terms… or by putting words in the boys’ mouths.
The world is not straight until proven gay, and ANY sexuality — not “just” the ones that fall under the LGBTQAIP umbrella — is not for someone else to determine. Your “defense” is starting, already, to become deeply homophobic, and that is as wrong as the misogyny that is rampant over on the slash fandom side.
I want to wear this post like a comfy sweater and then roll around in it all day long.
