HEY REMEMBER THE ENTIRE FIRST YEAR OF ONE DIRECTION WHERE HARRY AND LOUIS THOUGHT ALL THE LARRY STYLINSON STUFF WAS REALLY CUTE AND THEY OPENLY FLIRTED WITH EACH OTHER ON TWITTER BECAUSE THEY DIDN’T GIVE A FUCK IF PEOPLE THOUGHT THEY WERE GAY? AND THEN LOUIS GOT A GIRLFRIEND AND PEOPLE STARTED OPENLY HARASSING HER AND TALKING ABOUT HOW HORRIBLE LOUIS WAS FOR PUTTING HARRY THROUGH THE TRAUMA OF HAVING TO SEE HIM WITH HIS “BEARD”. AND THERE WAS THAT OTHER TIME THAT SOMEONE HARASSED HIS 14 YEAR OLD SISTER DURING HER TWITCAM ABOUT HER BROTHER BEING GAY. AND THAT OTHER TIME SOMEONE TOLD HIS MOTHER SHE KNEW LESS ABOUT WHAT WAS GOING ON IN HER SON’S LIFE THAN HIS FANS DID AND SHE SHOULD SHUT THE FUCK UP. YEAH. AND THOSE ARE ONLY THE THINGS WE’VE BEEN MADE AWARE OF AS A FANDOM. HOW MANY THINGS HAS LOUIS NOT ADDRESSED? HOW MANY THINGS HAS HE OVER LOOKED? SO MAYBE WE SHOULD ALL CONSIDER THAT HE’S ACTUALLY PISSED OFF ABOUT THE HARASSMENT AND NOT ABOUT BEING CALLED GAY… SINCE YOU KNOW, HE DIDN’T SEEM TO GIVE A FUCK ABOUT FOR THE ENTIRE FIRST YEAR OF 1D.

I understand what this post is getting at but honestly I really don’t think Louis could give a shit about the gay rumors, that’s not at all the issue. The problem he has is that a group of loud and disrespectful fans have constructed a life for him that involves the loss of his voice and his agency. They believe that he has absolutely no say in his life when it comes to who he loves and who he can be with, and they reinforce and protect this belief by obnoxiously telling him that they ~understand and that they’ll make the world better for him. That they’ll construct safe spaces for him by proclaiming his sexuality to anyone that will at least half listen to them. Essentially, they want to ~save him and show him that they’ll love him no matter what. Except a decent percentage of these people don’t respect him, use homophobic slurs to get their point across, will only “accept” him as gay completely ignoring the fact that there are more identifiers than gay and straight, and will only “approve” if he’s with Harry. And that says nothing about how often he, his family, and Eleanor are bombarded with either hate or pleas to get #management to back off and let him be with Harry.

It’s not about whether Louis is gay, straight, or anything other than straight. It’s about how unbelievably indulgent and patronizing it is to think that as fans it is up to us to save the not at all seemingly victimized celebrity we’re obsessed with. It’s about the complete lack of respect for the fact that he is in a relationship. It’s about Louis being uncomfortable with the fact that he can’t even look at Harry without thousands of fans crying about how unfair it is that they have to keep their love hidden because it’s so obvious it hurts. Or that he’s a bitch or a dickwad for putting Harry through all of this. Or that he’s a sad sack of a man who is being oppressed by the industry and all he needs is the clarion call of the fanbase to give him the strength to get up everyday and live his life because we ~understand and we ~get him like nobody else. It’s ridiculous and it’s shitty and it would make anyone uncomfortable. It has nothing to do with any insecuritues about his sexuality.

To be quite honest, it’s wonderful that the celebrities in this post responded so eloquently or nonchalantly on the subject of gay rumors about themselves. But I don’t think it’s at all fair to pick at Louis because he’s not holding up to some pedestaled view of how he should respond to these rumors that have largely been turned into attacks over and over again. The kid feels backed into a corner. The love he has for his girlfriend is being delegitimized because people think he’s in love with and fucking his best friend, his family keeps getting dragged into the situation, his girlfriend is barely getting treated like a human being with feelings, no one will listen to him when he says to back off and he’s in a relationship, and he’s constantly under scrutiny because the way he holds his wrist means he’s gay as well as his fringe, what he chooses to wear to soccer games, his butt, the light in his eyes, his smile, the way he touches Harry, the way he doesn’t touch Harry, etc.

Louis Tomlinson is not a gay caricature for the fandom to pick at or mold into what ever fantasy they want him to fulfill with Harry. He’s a person and he is not here for us to poke and prod at and shame because he doesn’t always come correct with his feelings. He’s going to say shit that will be upsetting to some especially when he’s upset and people he loves are in the line of fire. I’m not going to hold him up to some higher ideal when he hasn’t really said anything out of the way and I know for a fact that I might not handle the situation better myself. We can’t ask him to be perfect or to considered everyone’s feelings especially when it’s been shown over and over again that a large chunk of this fandom could give a fuck about his feelings.

This is a shitty situation for all parties involved but considering Louis’ the one who lives with this fuckery day in and day out, how he handles it is how he handles it. And until he does say something that is homophobic and problematic then to me he’s handling all of this the best he can and that’s all we can really ask.
